AI Developer for OpenAI Codex

An AI engineer powered by OpenAI Codex that runs inside Jira. Start it from any issue and it analyzes the task, generates a solution and delivers working code on a branch, typically within minutes.

Looking for a review step before code is written? See Spec Driven Development, which also works with OpenAI Codex.

How it works

Start from the issue

Click Implement in the AI Developer panel on any Jira issue — no extra setup per ticket.

AI analyzes the task

It reads the issue summary and description to understand what's being asked.

AI generates a solution

Claude Code or OpenAI Codex writes the implementation — code, tests, and dev notes as applicable.

Code pushed to branch

The implementation is committed and pushed to a dedicated branch in your configured repository.

Comment posted on issue

A comment on the Jira issue links the branch and summarizes what changed, so the team can review.

Comment feedback to refineOptional

Not quite right? Mention AI Developer in a comment with what to change, and it updates the same branch.

Features

Implement

One click in the AI Developer panel hands the issue to the AI. A planning step splits the ticket into tasks, then each task is implemented.

Automatic solution generation

Generates a complete proposed solution, including code, tests and dev notes, from the issue summary and description.

Inquiry

Ask a question about the ticket or your repository and get the answer as a Jira comment. Built-in templates cover Enhance description and Refine & verify; you can add your own on the Inquiries settings page.

Git integration

Commits and pushes to a dedicated ai/* branch in your repository. The base branch is never touched.

Comment-based refinement

Mention the app in a comment with what to change, and it updates its latest implementation on the same branch.

Multiple repositories

Configure several repositories per project and choose the target in the panel.

Setup

  1. Install the app from the Atlassian Marketplace.
  2. Add your repository and token: Git access.
  3. Connect OpenAI Codex: AI connections. Use an OpenAI API key, a Codex subscription, AWS Bedrock or Microsoft Foundry.
  4. Add a AGENTS.md to the repository root with build commands and conventions. The AI reads it automatically.

Usage

After installation the AI Developer panel appears on every issue. Use Implement to let the AI work on the issue, or Inquiry to ask a question. When the run finishes, a comment on the issue summarizes the result and names the branch. Review the branch as you would any other.

To change the result, mention the app in a comment on the issue and describe what to change. The AI continues on the latest result branch. Runs can take up to an hour on large tasks.
